The Just Cause series, created by Avalanche Studios in 2006, became well-known for its action-packed open world environments. However, there have been no updates since the release of its fourth installment in 2018, which received mixed reviews. The creator has indicated that the series is unlikely to make a comeback.
Christopher Sundberg recently stated that he doubts the franchise will make a comeback soon because he departed Avalanche Studios in 2020 to establish Liquid Swords and feels that there are insufficient remaining original team members to carry on the series.
Me and my team pitched Contraband back in 2017 to MSFT (and signed it). It’s changed quite a lot since then obviously, but it would have been fantastic to see it being released one day somehow. #JC5 would be a no-go since extremely few from the original team are there still. https://t.co/F9kxtXqi4k

My team and I presented Contraband to MSFT in 2017 and it was approved. The game has undergone significant changes since then, but it would have been great to see it released someday. However, the idea of #JC5 is not feasible as very few members of the original team are still involved.
Sundberg, one of the studio’s founders, expressed that the current version of the company lacks the creativity required for Just Cause. He emphasized the need for the company to rediscover its passion, be daring, challenge conventions, and create games that were deemed unachievable by others.
Just Cause 4 faced numerous issues.
Sundberg noted that the issues hindering the development of Just Cause 5 were already apparent during the creation of the fourth installment. He highlighted that Avalanche Studios experienced growth that led many creative team members to adopt more bureaucratic approaches.

The developer acknowledged that he didn’t prioritize working on his aspects of the game during its development. He mentioned focusing more on corporate responsibilities, dealing with the publisher, team composition, and various paperwork.
Sundberg believes that Just Cause 4 had potential but he struggled to effectively communicate his ideas. He mentioned his involvement in the team behind Counterband for Microsoft and expressed regret that the game was ultimately canceled.

Avalanche Studios has experienced layoffs and changes in recent years as it seeks a new identity. The company released a shooter game called Generation Zero in 2019, along with fishing and hunting games, and the action game Ravenbound in 2023.
