The Grand Theft Auto (GTA) series, which began in 1997, gained popularity for its satirical take on American life. Prior to exploring the US, the franchise released expansion packs set in London for its initial installment.
The series visited London in 1969 and 1961 to depict a surge of crimes in the queen’s country. Yet, over 25 years later, there are no signs of another similar journey happening, unless the speculations about GTA 6 online expanding to multiple countries come true.
Dan House, a co-founder of Rockstar Games, believes that the franchise has remained in the United States because its games are closely tied to North American characteristics.
Creating Grand Theft Auto in a different country would pose challenges, according to Houser.
Houser also mentioned that GTA’s strong connection to the United States is not just due to its stories or characters, but also its inclusion of weapons and scavenging characters. He emphasized that the games offer an external perspective on the country.
Although the franchise is heavily associated with the United States, both Dan and his brother Sam are from Britain. Likewise, while Rockstar Games’ main headquarters is in New York City, a significant portion of the GTA series was developed in Rockstar North, situated in Edinburgh, Scotland.
“The game had a strong focus on America, possibly seen through the eyes of someone from another country,” Houser stated. He emphasized that the series wouldn’t have been as successful in a different setting. Houser departed from the developer in March 2020 after many years of service.

Rockstar Games stopped working on Agent because they couldn’t make it successful, and Bully 2 didn’t progress at the studio because they didn’t have enough staff for it.
